About? Where? Meetings? Ground Plan Visitor Member News

Below is listed information pertinent to any visitor who may wish to run a locomotive at the CSME ground.

Access to the small steaming bay is by a traverser and hydraulic lift. Lifting of locomotives is not necessary from trailers or estate type cars.

Elevated Track

The track is a continuous loop with a reverse curve.

  • Track Length 700ft
  • Tightest Curve - 45ft Radius on a gradient of 1:120
  • Steepest Gradient 1:100
  • Gauges Available - 5"G, 3.5"G and 2.5"G. Track circuiting for automatic signalling is resident on the 5"G rails, so 5"G Driving Cars must be used with 3.5" and 2.5" Gauge locomotives.
  • A new anti-tip rail is being installed and is, at present fitted to approximately 25% of the elevated track. See revised diagram below for dimensions.
  • Two Steaming Bays available
      1. Large Bay - accessed via a turntable with 24Vdc and 12Vdc power supplies.
      2. Small Bay - accessed via a traverser with 24Vdc and 12Vdc power supplies.
  • All rolling stock wheels are expected to conform to national standards. Click here for the standards accepted by the CSME.

Ground Level Track

The track is a continuous loop running within the confines of the elevated track with its own station, turntable, sidings and two passing loops (one at the station). The ground level track is steel flat bottom rail.

  • Track Length approx 650ft
  • Passing Loop length 30ft
  • Tightest Curve - 36ft Radius
  • Steepest Gradient 1:100
  • Gauges Available - 7.25"G and 5"G.
  • Steaming Bays available adjacent to main gate with 12V and 24V power supplies.
  • All rolling stock wheels are expected to conform to national standards. Click here for the standards accepted by the CSME.
  • Gauges are available to verify that rolling stock wheels conform to the acceptable CSME standards.
NOTE: Some of the ground level track turnouts are sprung loaded so any rolling stock used on the ground level track (especially 5"G) must be of sufficient weight to move the turnout blades.

Visitors are reminded that all locomotive boilers will require a valid Boiler Certificate

Test requirements should be as detailed in
'THE EXAMINATION & TESTING OF MINIATURE STEAM BOILERS (Latest Edition)'

Locomotive drivers under the age of 16yrs must be adequately supervised at all times by a suitable society member
